Poplar: Electric Guitars Brendan McGeehan: Bass -- In 2019 Miles Orion, along with great friend and long time collaborator J. Poplar were asked by Homer Jackson, the Director of the Philadelphia Jazz Project to write a piece as a part of the Whitman at 200: Art and Democracy celebration. The music was written initially by Miles and words chosen from the Walt Whitman poem: "We Two, How Long We Were Fool'd." Then came a beautifully organic session at Retro City Studio in Germantown where members of the Philadelphia Jazz Project; Kimpedro Rodriguez, Waverly Alston, Homer Jackson joined other local musicians; Jasmine Thompson(keys), Paul Butler(clarinet/bass clarinet/sax), and Producer/Bassist Brendan McGeehan to capture the track. The result was a 16 minute piece of music that mastermind/wizard Brendan McGeehan cut into a rough structure. From there, J. Poplar layered electric guitars and soundscapes while Waverly Alston and Miles wrote tight and swirling harmonies. The final result landed on the 9th mixtape for the Whitman at 200 Mixtape Series featuring dozens of local musicians and poets. The project was initiated in conjunction with partner organizations across the Philadelphia and Camden, NJ region and major support for the artistic commissions was provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. As Whitman celebrated walking in poetry and life, artist/curator and director of the Philadelphia Jazz Project, Homer Jackson presented New Songs Of The Open Road: a special project consisting of a series of four audience participation events consisting of singing walkers "caroling" through the streets of North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, Center City and Germantown. These walks were simultaneously influenced by Whitman's poem "Songs of the Open Road" and inspired by civil rights movement freedom songs. Exhilarating songs of affirmation, written and arranged by vocalist/songwriter Toby VEnT Martin, choirmaster and composer Waverly Alston and vocalist/songwriter James Solomon, featured the voices of professional singers, gospel choir members and everyday members of the public.
